PLX powers safe flights

Durapipe PLX, the leading pipework solution for emergency fuel powered and UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supplies) markets, has been used within a radar station refurbishment in the North of Scotland.

Operated by National Air Traffic Service (NATS), Stornoway is a radar station located on the Isle of Lewis, off the west coast of Scotland that provides support to domestic and international flights, as well as providing weather information for the surrounding area.

The refurbishment is part of a £127 million programme by NATS to replace its entire radar network by 2012 in order to provide a higher standard of information and greater reliability. The work was carried out by Ness Engineering who carry out a full range of Engineering and Building related work throughout Shetland as well as in Orkney, the Western Isles and Mainland Scotland

As part of the project, the emergency fuel powered system needed updating so Durapipe PLX was specified to transport diesel oil from the storage tank to the stand by generator as it met the crucial and high specifications for the project.

Planes rely on the radar station for accurate and up to date information, so a power failure would be disastrous and it is therefore crucial that a reliable emergency fuel powered system is in place to ensure the station is continually operational. As a result a dependable product was needed to transport the fuel in the case of such an emergency.

Durapipe PLX pipe-in-pipe pipework system in sizes 90mm # 160mm was specified for the project and was used to replace the existing steel pipework that had been previously installed. Along with its exceptional resistance to rapid crack propagation and long term stress cracking, the pipework range was chosen for its cost effectiveness and ease of installation, in comparison to metal alternatives.

Commenting on the project, David Williamson from Ness Engineering Ltd said: “This refurbishment of the emergency power supply was a large part of our development at Stornoway this year, and we required a product that we could be certain would deliver quality and reliability in the case of an emergency.

We found the quality of Durapipe PLX excellent and were particularly impressed with the superiority of the customer service we received during the project itself, as well as the after care and communication. We look forward to working with Durapipe UK again in the future.”
